My godson Christian performed this piece by Yiruma at the Randall Middle School Talent show in Lithia Florida November 19th, 2009, the day before his 13th Birthday. His dad Charlie recorded this version later that night at home for family and friends who could not be there. Christian has been playing piano since he was five years old. You might recognize this composition from the Twilight soundtrack and The Final Fantasy video game.

Every year Mile High Harley-Davidson holds their annual Bug Run and Summer Kickoff Party in late May so that bikers from all around the city can get out on a nice day and break in their bikes for the summer months. I was fortunate enough to follow the hundreds of riders that showed up along the route and get some spectacular shots of them cruising out on the plains as they made their way back to the party. I left in a lot of the movement because I thought it added an exciting dimension to the piece and was stoked about the response I got as they rode by. I usually produced a 2-3 minute piece for their website, but this day I ended up producing two pieces for a combined 10 minutes.

This was shot before I had my HD package on BetaSP using the Sony DXC-D30 Widescreen camera with an 18x Canon Lens and extender to add more depth of field on the really long shots out on the highway. Most of the footage is shot between Bennett and Aurora, Colorado along Highway 40 more commonly known as Colfax Ave., once called “the longest, wickedest street in America.” by Playboy magazine.

The biggest challenge on a shoot like this is to stay ahead of the riders, find a place to shoot from and don’t endanger anyone from your position. Always stay visible on the side of the road for both the bikers and other motorists so that when they see you they’ll wave or holler out. One of my favorite shots of all time is the guy on the thumbnail and at 3:15 who stands up on his bike as he passes through the scene. He even looks back to make sure I’m getting him, probably with a big grin under his hat. Ride On Brother!

Here’s another production photo taken of the primary actors during our shoot outside Leadville, Colorado on November 14th. Danny and Taylor take a break in the snow while we discuss the shot. We were losing light and battery power by this point, but we still got all the shots plus additional b-roll before the snow started falling. Thanks to all the crew for helping strike and getting us out of there before dark.

We used the Red Camera on this shoot, seen here on the end of my 24 foot Triangle JimmyJib camera crane. The producers purchased the camera and had only enough money left to buy Nikon DSLR prime lenses, but made up for the low budget with creative ideas and guerilla production. On this shot we used a 50mm lens with a .9 and .6 ND filter combined to knock down the super white snow and cloud cover. We also used a pantyhose filter to give the shot an ethereal, dreamlike feel. Kenton Bartlett (kentonbartlett.com) is the writer/director of the movie titled “Missing Pieces” and is winding down a three week, cross-country shoot schedule in Utah and Texas before heading back to Birmingham, AL.

Vera took this photo at our first location in Twin Lakes near Leadville Colorado. Just off Highway 82 below Independence Pass, this incredible view made for a perfect backdrop to the scene we were shooting for the independent feature “Missing Pieces”.
