After enduring some ribbing about the engine under the hood of our rental we climbed aboard the 42 foot sailboat and sailed for about three hours in the San Francisco Bay shooting HD for an upcoming video production.  We used the HDX900 and captured everything in 1080i using the FS100 Firestore.  Because I had to shoot handheld, it was challenging working off the bow of the craft once we turned up the sails. The boat leans way over, and there was little room for error.  I was clipped in and only felt light ocean spray most of the time.  Luckily, it wasn’t until I had completed my shots when a nice wave splashed over and soaked my pants. Nevertheless, we had great weather and, after a brief shiver, I dried quickly.  Stay tuned for video.

Salvador Dali http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2010/02/15/salvador-dali/ http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2010/02/15/salvador-dali/#comments Tue, 16 Feb 2010 06:02:18 +0000 Administrator http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/?p=295 More production photos. These are from our video shoot with Sean Guerrero AKA Chromesean impersonating the great Salvador Dali on Transmission Studio’s cyc wall for an upcoming featurette. We shot video on Sean’s Panasonic HVX 200 in SD DV mode so that he can match some old footage when he gets into post. He’s been growing his mustache thick to get it strong enough to hold the flowers on the tips.  I’ve been experimenting with my new KW2 fluorescent studio lights.  You’ll notice some variation on the wall using the MSL 255.  These are not really cyc lights, but I thought I’d give them a try to conserve energy and run a little cooler. You can see some variation caused by the fluorescent tubes on the wall.  This forced us to open the iris a little to even out the background.  The daylight balanced tubes really made the green pop and the key was accomplished with minor tweeking in Final Cut. I’m also using the 2BL 455 soft fill and the MSL 155 on the boom. Overall, I like these lights.  They are built for studio use and will help reduce our carbon footprint and save us money on the power bill.

Here are some of the production photos of Chemist 3s music video shoot at Transmission Studio on Wednesday. G, Yvette and Rico are putting together a video for their new track “Turn It Up” which, I must say, is a sic song. Yvette’s vocals are beautiful and paired with G and Rico will send this song up the charts. The shoot went smoothly and, as you can see, the images look really hot. This was the first shoot on our green cyc wall, and our producer was really happy with the outcome and ease of use in the studio. We are using KW2 florescent lights on the green background and a tungsten kit for the subjects. The cyc lights are part of the studio rental package. The backlit shots turned out awesome with the fog machine creating a look that makes you feel they are in the middle of the street. And the shadowbox turned into a really nice image to mix in with the others. The group shot is of the crew and friends. Back Row L-R: Arjae, Rodney Billups (Chauncey Billups brother), G Smith (Producer/Songwriter), Julia Henderson, Rico Henderson, Yvette Marshall, Brianna Marshall, Vera Lucero and Phil Lucero. Front Row L-R: Johnny Moorehouse (DP), Chris Guillot (Director) and Dwayne.

Union Pacific Railyard http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2010/01/07/union-pacific-railyard/ http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2010/01/07/union-pacific-railyard/#comments Thu, 07 Jan 2010 16:52:03 +0000 Administrator http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/?p=210 This is a Blackberry photo of the Union Pacific Railyard in Tucson, AZ where PL Productions shot video for an upcoming public information piece with URS Corporation’s Creative Solutions Group. The engine in the center of the picture is referred to as the “Green Goat”, but is officially the YD40.  We never figured out why it is nicknamed that.  It was really interesting working with the Union Pacific and having access to the yards and lines in Arizona.  The rail line is currently replacing old track and we were afforded the opportunity to get an up close look at how it is done. You might imagine black and white photos of thousands of Chinese laborers with sledgehammers, but it is now very automated and requires only a handful of workers to keep the machines running.  All of the old wooden ties are removed and new concrete ties are put in place.

Our locations were between Phoenix and Tucson, so we not only enjoyed warm sunny weather far from the single digits in Colorado, but we were also treated to many historic and interesting sites including Picacho Peak Monument. Unfortunately, the monument has suffered a major drop in tourism and the site looks like a burned out ghost town.  Nevertheless, the ostrich farm next door seems to be doing OK.

One Business Connection http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2009/12/11/test/ http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2009/12/11/test/#comments Fri, 11 Dec 2009 22:58:21 +0000 Administrator http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/?p=116 Phil Lucero Productions – Presenting One Business Connection Netskills ‘09

This is a short promotional video produced for One Business Connection’s 2009 Netskills event (www.onebusiness.com). We were originally asked to tape four speakers at this event to put together some informational/instructional videos of the presentations for the 1BC members. Greg Petri wanted to put these videos on the website and possibly sell them as DVDs. After the presentations, I moved through the room interviewing exhibitors about their memberships in the networking group. This is how the video turned out. Again, this was a no budget production, but we captured some great commentary and I believe that the people we put into the piece were genuinely happy about their effort and turnout at the affair. It is short, but complete!

We produced this video before we obtained our HD camera, so it was shot on broadcast BetaSP in 16×9 format using the Sony DXC-D30WS camera and posted on our Final Cut Pro 2 editing system. The files were exported using Quicktime’s export for web function and delivered via FTP to the One Business Connection website. The biggest challenges we faced were sound and lighting in this small venue at the Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada, Colorado. For the speakers we used two Arri 1K Fresnel lights flooded out to fill the stage. The speakers had a handheld mic to work with and, although this was not their favorite option, it was the best choice since we couldn’t afford to bring in an audio tech and stage manager. For the promotional piece I used a Pag sungun camera light and hardwired Sennheiser K66 shotgun microphone to capture the best sound in a noisy environment. I really treated it like a news package, run and gun, so that we were mobile and could get the best possible pictures and sound in tight quarters.

Smiles Change Lives http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2009/12/11/5/ http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2009/12/11/5/#comments Fri, 11 Dec 2009 15:25:17 +0000 Administrator http://philluceroproductions.com/blog1/2009/12/11/5/ Smiles Change Lives is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people from low-income families obtain orthodontic services they would, otherwise, not be able to afford. PL Productions was asked by our friend and SCL volunteer Jessica George to tape Dr. Hilary Nieberg as she put a brand new set of braces on Colorado’s first SCL patient Breeanna Herrera. After we shot the appointment we went back into the edit bay and cut a short promotional piece highlighting the group and the process.

This was one of the first videos we shot on the new Panasonic HDX900 HD camera. Everything was recorded to a Focus Enhancements Firestore FS-100 DTE drive and posted on the Final Cut Pro 6 workstation in our new offices at Colorado’s best photo/video/film studio Transmission Studio in Denver (TransmissionStudio.net). Smiles Change Lives (www.smileschangelives.org) posted the video on YouTube (www.youtube.com/smileschangelives) and now has 90 views.

Please visit their site by clicking on the image and consider donating to this worthwhile cause. as you can see in the newsletter, they are trying to help out many more young people who need orthodontic treatment. Also, don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of the newsletter and read all the nice things they said about us : )
