Tom took this photo during production at Vestas wind turbine company in Windsor, Colorado.  We’re interviewing Kevin Corey for an investor video with Metro Denver EDC.  This is the factory where Vestas manufactures their windmill blades. The blades are 140 feet long, made of fiberglass and weigh over 6 tons. Each windmill has three. The biggest challenge to shooting inside the factory was dealing with factory noise.  We were lucky, however, because the work of buffing out the blades required only a very quiet vacuum system.  It was consistent the entire time we were there, so we recorded additional room tone and will even out the audio in post.

Tom took these shots of our set-up for “TV Show”, a variety/talk show we’re producing at the studio. This stage is 25′ x 25′ and has suspended pipe for lighting. It is perfect for use with the curved mobile walls and can be set and re-set easily for multiple productions. In case you were wondering, yes I have removed the Christmas lights from the camera crane jib arm.

Below is a shot of me trying to look important as the lights go up.

Vera took these production pics of the MLA Photonix/Elevation Creation photoshoot in Transmission Studio earlier this week.  Below, Daniel Montano of Elevation Creation arrives for the shoot.  Michael Albert is the photographer and Holly is the model.  Michael and Daniel came up with an awsome concept for their client, using Holly as the executive businesswoman and Photoshop to create an effect for the campaign to run on their client’s website.

Colorado Commercials shoots the second part of their spot for Elite Audio Solutions in the Transmission Studio Loft in Denver.  Antonio Lucio lit the speakers with a single Arri 150 fresnel using the snoot for a more focused beam.  They rented the turntable from Kevin Mauch of KDM Productions and added the fogger for effect. Sam Teeters, Owner of Elite Audio Solutions, looks through the viewfinder.  The footage turned out great and I’m looking forward to seeing the final edited piece.

Although still in the construction process, our loft stage is 20 x 20 and features black velvet stage curtains, a blackout curtain for the windows and a lounge like atmosphere for comfort. We’ve installed lighting pipes and more KW2 fluorescent studio lights and plenty of power for smaller production.

The snow started falling at four Tuesday afternoon.  Big, heavy, wet flakes.  Looking out our office windows we watched the weather change throughout the day.  First sunshine, then clouds.  Drizzle turned to hail and then snow.  We looked on as the snowfall continued, the wind blowing sheets sideways.  It ebbed and waned for the first hour or so, but then the spring blizzard took hold.  The snow was now sticking to the surface.  As one flake after another piled on we wondered if the forecast was right.  Up to twelve inches overnight they said. At six o’clock we decided to venture out to make our way home. In the parking lot, it felt like a barrage of mini snowballs. I was glad we didn’t wait any longer. Finally, at home, we could relax.

Sunday really warmed up in Denver.  After a spring snowfall and temperatures in the thirties, the sun broke through and gave the city a taste of the warm weather to come.  I saw this view at Smith and Holly in North Denver on Saturday, but I didn’t have my camera with me, so I went back on Sunday hoping the train cars would still be there.  These are Union Pacific Railroad cars waiting to be picked up.  Although the view with snow on the ground Saturday is what got my attention, the position of the cars with the phone poles and mountains in the background made this view attractive to me.  I’m shooting the Nikon D700 with a Nikor 300mm telephoto lens.  The picture was taken at 3:20pm using 1/4000 shutter at F 5.6  with the ISO is set at 400.  I ran the auto levels and color in Photoshop to brighten the image. Here are some Blackberry photos from San Francisco that were shot last Sunday during a shoot for NASA.  Bobby and I pulled  into the Treasure Island Yacht Club in a rented Dodge Charger to find a group of custom rebuilt Challenger owners discussing their cars. After enduring some ribbing about the engine under the hood of our rental we climbed aboard the 42 foot sailboat and sailed for about three hours in the San Francisco Bay shooting HD for an upcoming video production.  We used the HDX900 and captured everything in 1080i using the FS100 Firestore.  Because I had to shoot handheld, it was challenging working off the bow of the craft once we turned up the sails. The boat leans way over, and there was little room for error.  I was clipped in and only felt light ocean spray most of the time.  Luckily, it wasn’t until I had completed my shots when a nice wave splashed over and soaked my pants. Nevertheless, we had great weather and, after a brief shiver, I dried quickly.  Stay tuned for video.

More production photos. These are from our video shoot with Sean Guerrero AKA Chromesean impersonating the great Salvador Dali on Transmission Studio’s cyc wall for an upcoming featurette. We shot video on Sean’s Panasonic HVX 200 in SD DV mode so that he can match some old footage when he gets into post. He’s been growing his mustache thick to get it strong enough to hold the flowers on the tips.  I’ve been experimenting with my new KW2 fluorescent studio lights.  You’ll notice some variation on the wall using the MSL 255.  These are not really cyc lights, but I thought I’d give them a try to conserve energy and run a little cooler. You can see some variation caused by the fluorescent tubes on the wall.  This forced us to open the iris a little to even out the background.  The daylight balanced tubes really made the green pop and the key was accomplished with minor tweeking in Final Cut. I’m also using the 2BL 455 soft fill and the MSL 155 on the boom. Overall, I like these lights.  They are built for studio use and will help reduce our carbon footprint and save us money on the power bill.
